Just thought I’d put up one of my all-time favourite cinematic moments from one of my favourite films, Blade Runner. I watched it the other day with my son who quickly got bored and nearly fell asleep, something I remember doing when I first watched it when I was a kid.

The version I watched was the Director’s Cut which I’d not seen before. I think I prefer the original with the ‘happy ending’ where Deckard and Rachael drive off through the countryside. I always liked the idea that nature still grew strong outside of the neon-lit gloom of futuristic Los Angeles.

So, what’s my favourite scene? Probably what most people’s is I would think, from the movie, and that’s the death of Roy, the leader of the Nexus 6 Replicant’s that Harrison Ford’s Deckard is hunting down. The scene is usually called, as it is on Vangelis’ wonderful soundtrack, ‘Tears in the Rain’. I once heard that Rutger Hauer, who plays Roy, ad-libbed his part here (this came from Hauer himself) but have since heard this isn’t true. I don’t know what the truth is but whatever, I think it’s brilliant anyway.

Here’s the transcription:

“I’ve…seen things you people wouldn’t believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I watched c-beams glitter in the dark near the Tanhauser Gate. All those…moments will be lost…in time, like…tears…in the rain. Time to die.”

Until next time,

Jimbob
