Website FAQ's

  • What is a domain name?

Domain names (DNS) are used to identify IP addresses. Domain names are used in URL's (web address) to identify particular web pages. For example, in the URL http://imaginata.co.uk, the domain name is imaginata.co.uk.

All domain names have a suffix that shows which top level domain (TLD) it belongs to. For example:

  • gov - Government agencies
  • edu - Educational institutions
  • org - Organizations (not for profit)
  • com - commercial business
  • net - Network organizations
  • ca - Canada
  • An example of a second level domain would be .co.uk.
    • What is server space?

Server space is the space reserved on a large computer (the server) that houses web pages and it runs 24/7. When a person types in a correct URL, the web page on that server is then retrieved and viewed on that persons computer.

    • What is eCommerce?

eCommerce is basically the same as everyday, material commerce in shops, banking and any kind of transaction except that it is all done electronically (electronic commerce).
